The Do's and Don'ts of Prepping for Your Senior Portrait Session for the Guys

Prepping for Your Senior Portrait Session for the Guys: What to Do (and What to Avoid)

Senior portraits are an important milestone—even if your son doesn’t see it that way just yet. A little preparation ahead of time can make the experience smoother, quicker, and far less stressful for everyone involved. This guide is designed to help parents know how to support their senior with simple, practical prep that leads to confident, natural portraits you’ll both appreciate for years to come.

Senior portraits may not be at the top of most guys’ priority lists—and that’s okay. The good news is that prepping for a senior portrait session doesn’t have to be complicated or uncomfortable. A little planning ahead of time helps the session move quickly, keeps things relaxed, and leads to photos you’ll actually like. Here’s a straightforward guide to what to do (and what to avoid) when prepping for your senior portrait session.

DO plan your outfits ahead of time.

One of the easiest ways to set the session up for success is choosing outfits in advance. Stick with solid colors, neutral tones, and classic pieces like button-downs, polos, or lightweight jackets. Most importantly, wear clothes that fit well and feel like you. Try everything on before the session to make sure it’s comfortable, clean, and wrinkle-free.

DON’T wait until the last minute.

Grabbing something from the closet right before heading out often leads to wrinkled shirts, poor fit, or outfits that don’t photograph well. Planning ahead helps the session run smoothly and keeps stress to a minimum.

DO pay attention to grooming.

A haircut about a week before your session is ideal—it looks natural while still polished. Trim facial hair or shave, clean up your nails, and make sure your shoes are clean. These small details might not seem important, but they make a noticeable difference in senior portraits.

DON’T make drastic changes right before your session.

This isn’t the time to try a brand-new hairstyle, grow out facial hair at the last minute, or skip grooming altogether. Sudden changes can make you feel uncomfortable, and that discomfort can show in photos.

DO bring items that reflect who you are.

If sports, music, or other activities are a big part of your life, feel free to bring along meaningful items like sports equipment, instruments, or a letter jacket. These personal touches help tell your story and make your portraits feel more authentic—without overcomplicating the session.

DON’T overthink it.

You don’t need to bring everything you own or stress about props. Simple, intentional choices work best and keep the focus on you.

DO trust your photographer.

You don’t need to know how to pose or what to do with your hands—that’s part of the photographer’s job. You’ll be guided through the session with easy direction, natural posing, and plenty of encouragement to keep things relaxed.

DON’T stress about looking “perfect.”

The goal isn’t stiff poses or forced smiles. The best senior portraits come from natural expressions and confidence. Relax, be yourself, and let the session unfold naturally.

Senior portraits don’t have to be awkward or stressful. With a little planning and the right mindset, prepping for your senior portrait session for the guys can be simple—and even enjoyable. The result is a smooth experience and images that capture this milestone in a way you’ll be proud of for years to come.
