Senior Portrait Prep for Girls: Simple Dos and Don’ts for a Stress-Free Session
Your senior portrait session is a celebration of who you are right now—your style, your personality, and this exciting milestone in your life. A little preparation ahead of time can make your session relaxed, fun, and stress-free. This guide to senior portrait prep for girls will help you feel confident, comfortable, and completely camera-ready.
DO plan your outfits ahead of time.
Start choosing your outfits at least a few weeks before your session. Look for pieces that feel like you and fit comfortably. Flowy dresses, classic denim, soft textures, and timeless colors photograph beautifully and won’t feel dated years from now. Try everything on ahead of time and make sure you can sit, walk, and move easily in each outfit. Bringing two to three outfit options gives variety while still keeping the session manageable.

DON’T wear anything uncomfortable or distracting.
If you’re constantly adjusting straps, pulling sleeves, or feeling awkward, it will show in your expressions and body language. Avoid neon colors, busy patterns, and large logos that can distract from your face. When in doubt, keep it simple—your smile and personality should be the focus.
DO think through hair and makeup in advance.
Whether you’re doing your own hair and makeup or hiring a professional, aim for a polished version of your everyday look. Soft, natural makeup enhances your features and photographs best. Freshly washed hair, clean nails, and light grooming details make a big difference in how finished your portraits look.
DON’T try drastic changes right before your session.
This is not the time for a dramatic haircut, bold hair color, heavy spray tan, or experimental makeup trend. Stick with what you already know you love so you feel confident and comfortable in front of the camera.
DO bring meaningful personal touches.
Accessories, jewelry, shoes, or props tied to sports, music, or hobbies can add personality and tell your story. These small details help make your portraits feel personal and unique—without overwhelming the images.

DON’T overthink the experience.
You don’t need to practice posing or worry about how to stand. That’s your photographer’s job! Trust the process, be open to direction, and focus on enjoying the moment.
Senior portraits are about capturing this once-in-a-lifetime season in a way that feels authentic and confident. With a little planning and a positive mindset, your session will be not only beautiful—but a fun memory you’ll always look back on with a smile.
