What to Wear for Your Senior Portrait Session: A Guide for the Guys

Let’s be honest—most guys don’t wake up excited to plan outfits for senior portraits. And that’s totally fine. The good news? You don’t need a closet overhaul or anything complicated to look great in your photos. A few smart choices can make a huge difference, and the goal is simple: look like the best version of you.

Here’s a straightforward guide to help guys feel confident, comfortable, and camera-ready on portrait day.

Stick With Clothes That Actually Fit

Fit matters more than brand names or trends. Shirts that are too baggy can look sloppy, and anything too tight will feel uncomfortable (and look it). Try everything on ahead of time and make sure it fits well through the shoulders, chest, and waist.

If needed, a simple tailor adjustment can go a long way—and it’s usually quick and affordable.

Keep It Simple With Colors and Patterns

Solid colors are your best friend. Neutrals like navy, gray, white, black, olive, or khaki photograph really well and won’t distract from your face.

Avoid loud logos, graphics, or tiny patterns. These can pull attention away from you and

date your photos quickly. Clean, classic pieces will keep your portraits timeless.

Layering Is an Easy Win

Layers add depth and interest without much effort. A button-down over a t-shirt, a lightweight jacket, a quarter-zip, a vest, or a blazer instantly elevates an outfit and gives you variety without a full outfit change. Plus, layers give us options—jacket on, jacket off—so you get more looks in less time.

Dress It Up (Just a Little)

Even if you live in athletic shorts or jeans, senior portraits are a great excuse to clean it up a bit. One dressier outfit—like a button-down with chinos or dark jeans—adds a polished look to your gallery.

You don’t need to feel uncomfortable or overdressed, just intentional. Think “nice dinner out,” not “formal event.”

Comfort Still Comes First

If you’re constantly tugging at your shirt, adjusting your collar, or feeling stiff, it will show. Choose outfits you can move in, sit in, and relax in. When you’re comfortable, you’ll look more natural—and those are always the best photos.

What About Shoes?

Shoes may seem like a small detail, but they can quietly complement the overall look of senior portraits. Choosing a clean, well-fitting pair helps keep outfits looking put-together without drawing attention away from you. Simple, classic shoes tend to photograph best and blend seamlessly into the final images. Whether it’s boots, sneakers, or dress shoes, take a few minutes to clean them well before your session—they’ll photograph better and help keep your overall look polished and put-together.

Where to Shop for Guys?

Just like with the girls, senior year is busy—and shopping isn’t always a top priority. I always encourage supporting local boutiques when possible, especially for unique, well-fitting pieces. Many local stores offer great service and can help put together an outfit quickly.

That said, online shopping can be a huge time-saver—especially for guys who want something simple, comfortable, and easy to wear. Many online stores offer clean basics, classic fits, and versatile pieces that look great on camera without feeling overdone. These options make it easy to put together an outfit that feels natural and confident, even if shopping isn’t your favorite thing. Once you’re booked, I’m always happy to help guide outfit choices or review selections if you’re unsure.

Below, I’ve put together a list of my 10 favorite online stores for finding classic, go-to senior portrait outfits for guys—reliable options that make planning easy, straightforward, and completely stress-free.
