Part 1: How to Prepare for Your Senior Portrait Session

What to do 2-4 Months in Advance to Prepare for Your Senior Portrait Session

Your senior year is a whirlwind of activities, big moments, and endless “to-do” lists! While it’s exciting, it can also feel overwhelming. Scheduling your senior portraits is one of those things that, if you’re not careful, might seem like just another box to check off. But we don’t want that!

Senior portraits should be fun, not stressful. They’re something to look forward to—an experience designed to capture who you are at this unique point in your life. To make sure your session feels relaxed, enjoyable, and memorable, it’s best to prepare for your senior portraits well in advance. Here’s what you should be doing two to four months before your session.

1. Pick a Time and Date

Choosing the right time and date is key. Look at your schedule and pick a time when you’ll feel relaxed and not rushed. Senior year gets BUSY, and photographers book quickly, especially in the fall and winter when the days are shorter. Keep in mind that the most flattering light is in the early morning (around sunrise) or late afternoon (just before sunset). Planning ahead will give you the best chance of securing the ideal time.

2. Pick a Location

The location of your shoot can set the tone for your photos. Do you want a natural, outdoor setting, or do you prefer an urban backdrop? All of my clients receive a style guide that has a list of locations to help them get started. If you have somewhere special in mind, please let me know! I love exploring new locations! Is there a location that holds sentimental value to you or your parents? Tell me about it!! Whether it’s a favorite park, a downtown area, or your school campus, I want to make sure your images are a true reflection of your personality and style.

3. Fill Out and Return the Senior Questionnaire

My clients receive a questionnaire to fill out and return to me before our senior portrait session. This helps me to better understand your preferences, style, and expectations leading up to your session. This form includes questions like: what are your hobbies, would you like to incorporate any props, how do you describe your style, and are there any specific ideas you have for your session? The more detailed you are, the more personalized and tailored your session will feel.

4. Ask Your Photographer Any Questions You May Have

Never hesitate to reach out if you’re unsure about something! Whether you’re curious about outfits, props, makeup, hair, or even what happens on the day of your session, asking ahead will put you at ease. No question is too small—chances are, I’ve been asked it before! I’d much rather you check in with me than feel stressed or uncertain. Good communication helps us stay on the same page, and it’s one of the best ways to feel confident and fully prepared when the big day arrives.

5. Read Through the Style Guide and Start Thinking About Your Outfits

All of my clients receive a 43-page style guide full of tips and inspiration. This is the perfect time to start pulling outfits together. Aim for a variety of looks—casual, semi-formal, and something that just feels very “you.” Make sure your clothes are clean, pressed, and fit well. Planning now means you won’t be scrambling the week of your session.

6. Take Care of Your Hair, Nails, and Skin

A polished look goes a long way in helping you feel confident in front of the camera. Schedule haircuts, color touch-ups, or nail appointments at least a week before your session so everything has time to settle and look natural. Fresh, neat hair and clean nails will make a big difference in how polished your portraits appear.

And let’s talk about spray tans. I know the idea of a sun-kissed glow sounds tempting, but please—skip the spray tan before your senior portraits. Spray tans almost always photograph with an orange or uneven tone. The result ends up looking less natural and distracts from your true beauty.

Instead, embrace your natural skin tone—it photographs beautifully every single time. If you do spend time outdoors leading up to your session, be mindful of tan lines (especially from swimsuits or strappy tops). Uneven tan lines are very noticeable in portraits and are nearly impossible to edit out. A little preparation now will ensure your skin looks fresh, natural, and flawless in every image.

Being prepared and knowing what to expect is key to helping you feel comfortable and make the whole process enjoyable. Stay tuned for Part 2, where we'll dive into what you need to bring to your portrait session.
