So, you’ve booked your senior portrait session (yay!)—and now you’re standing in front of your closet thinking, What am I supposed to wear? First of all, take a deep breath. Outfit planning doesn’t have to be stressful, and it definitely doesn’t need to turn into a last-minute panic. With a little intention and a few smart choices, you can create looks that feel like you and photograph beautifully.

Here are five simple but important tips to help you look and feel your best on portrait day.

1. You Don’t Have to Buy Something New for Your Senior Portraits

Before you rush out to the mall or start filling an online cart, take a good look at what you already own. You might be surprised at how many great options you have hanging in your closet. Pieces that fit well, feel comfortable, and reflect your personality often photograph better than brand-new clothes.

New outfits can be fun, but they can also feel stiff, unfamiliar, or just not quite right. If you do decide to buy something new, make sure you wear it at least once or twice beforehand so it feels natural and comfortable by the time your session arrives.

2. Avoid Tiny Patterns

Small, busy patterns—like tiny stripes, tight florals, or intricate prints—can be tricky on camera. While they may look cute in person, they often don’t photograph well and can create a distracting or blurry effect in images.

Instead, opt for solid colors, subtle prints, or textured fabrics like denim, lace, knits, or linen. These choices add visual interest without stealing the spotlight from you, which is exactly what we want in your senior portraits.

3. Skip the Spray Tan

I know the idea of a sun-kissed glow is tempting, but spray tans rarely photograph the way we hope they will. Even the most “natural” formulas can show up orange, patchy, or uneven in professional photos.

The good news? Your natural skin tone is beautiful just the way it is—no tanning products needed.

4. Don’t Be Afraid to Dress Things Up!

Senior portraits are a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so this is your chance to dress up a bit if you want to. A flowy dress, a tailored blazer, a sharp suit, or a statement piece can add a polished, elevated feel to your session.

You don’t need to go full red-carpet glam (unless that’s your thing, and if it is, I Am HERE FOR IT!!), but having at least one outfit that feels a little extra can make your portraits feel timeless and special.

5. Comfort is Key..

Looking amazing is important—but feeling comfortable is just as crucial. If an outfit is too tight, itchy, or constantly needs adjusting, it will show in your expressions and body language.

Choose outfits that allow you to move, sit, laugh, and relax. When you’re comfortable, you’ll feel more confident—and that confidence always shines through in photos.

Where to Shop?

Senior year is busy. Between school, activities, sports, and everything else on your plate, finding time to shop for outfits can feel overwhelming. While I am a big supporter of shopping local—and always encourage my clients to check out small, locally owned boutiques first—I also understand that sometimes convenience matters.

Local boutiques offer beautifully curated, hand-picked pieces that are hard to beat, and I actually provide all of my booked clients with a list of favorite local stores I recommend. That said, I’m also a busy mom who has lived through senior year, and I know how quickly your to-do list fills up. Sometimes online shopping is simply the most realistic option—and that’s okay!

Online stores can be a lifesaver when time is limited, and they offer endless options delivered straight to your door.

Below, I’ve put together a list of my 10 favorite online stores for finding senior portrait outfits. These picks are geared more toward the girls, but I’m always on the lookout for great recommendations for the guys, too—so if you have favorites, please send them my way!

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, your senior portraits should truly reflect you. The best outfits are the ones that make you feel confident, comfortable, and completely yourself. When you feel good in what you’re wearing, it shows in every photo. If you’re unsure about your outfit choices or just want a second opinion, I’m always happy to help you plan looks that feel natural and photograph beautifully before your session.
